A compact, herbaceous perennial that uses modified, pitcher-like leaves to trap and digest insects. Inhabiting peat bogs scarce in nitrogen, pitcher plants use carnivory to gather the nutrients they need. Purple pitcher plant is the only pitcher plant species native to Maine.
